A crash on the Artesia (91) Freeway that killed a 33-year-old motorist and sent his passenger, a 31-year-old woman, to a hospital in critical condition was under investigation today.

The crash was reported at 10:32 p.m. Friday on the eastbound side of the freeway just west of Pioneer Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver, identified by CHP officials as Bellflower resident Jaime Arzola, was traveling on the eastbound freeway in a 2007 Ford Mustang when his car drifted to the right and struck a raised asphalt curb on the shoulder, according to a CHP statement.
The car also struck a medal paddle marker, a freeway sign and a tree, before finally hitting the soundwall and coming to rest facing south on the shoulder, according to the statement.
Paramedics took Bellflower resident Rubi Aidel Arzola to Long Beach Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Jaime Arzola was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:01 p.m., according to the statement.
